Co-Curricular Activities

Co-Curricular activities are in addition to the curriculum provided during the regular school hours.  These activities are student interest-based to provide enrichment opportunities for students before and after the regular school hours.  Some of the events for the co-curricular activities may occur during the regular school day.
BREAKFAST CLUB

Grades 5-8

Club Supervisor: Mr. Scott Hunter and Mrs. Jen Scott

Explanation/Description

Students who eat a healthy breakfast are more alert and achieve better academically. Eating breakfast in school is a simple way for students to have a healthy start to their day. All students are invited to join us on a drop-in basis for Breakfast Club.  

How can students join?

There is no need to sign up! Breakfast Club meets in the lunch room.  Enter through the side gym doors on Warren Street. As long as students are in the door by 8:00 am, they may have breakfast with us! 

Expectations of Students:

There is a cost if the student buys breakfast; however, if a student receives free or reduced lunch, breakfast is free!  We also will help with homework during Breakfast Club, so it’s a great way to get any last minute work done before the school day begins.

Meeting Times:

Every morning from 7:40 - 8:10 am

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Grades 5-8

Club Advisor:  Ms. Lucy Shunk and Mr. Tyler Kozimor

Explanation/Description

Athletes participate in several practices in training for meets against other local middle school cross country clubs. Athletes run one and a half miles at most, and are always encouraged to do their personal best.

How can students join?

Students can pick up a permission slip and they must have a sports physical in order to participate.

            Expectations of Students:

Student are expected to participate fully and always try their best.

            Meeting Times:

The day of the week varies; however, practices are typically from 2:55-4:00 pm and meets are from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, returning back to the Middle School by 5:30 pm at the latest.

 

DRAMA CLUB

Grades 5-8

Club Advisor: Ms. Erin Durkin

Assistant Club Advisor:  Ms. Taylor Rudd

Explanation/Description

Students join Drama Club because they enjoy theater and want to observe and take part in the art of performance, both on and backstage. The culminating activity is the play which is dependent on hours of work, both after school and at home. This club requires dedication on the part of the student to learn lines, cues, and help with costuming.

How can students join?

Students must attend an interest meeting, return a parent/student contract and then participate in auditions; held typically in the winter time.

Expectations of Students:

Students must attend all scheduled rehearsals for Drama Club and be available for all performances. If a student misses more than 2 rehearsals, he or she will be dismissed from the play and/or unable to attend our Broadway trip.

Meeting Times:

Primarily Monday and Wednesday from 2:55-4:00 pm, approximately December through March.

 

HACKET-TONES ENSEMBLE

Grades 6-8

Club Advisor: Mrs. Colleen Grzywacz

Explanation/Description

Hacket-Tones Ensemble is an auditioned choir that meets weekly after school for those students in the Tenor and Bass voice parts. The group performs challenging repertoire in each concert as well as travels to choral workshops and adjudications throughout the year.

How can students join?

All Chorus students are eligible to audition for these select choirs. Auditions will take place after school during in September. Students must sign up for an audition slot posted on Google Classroom. Students will audition with two scales and a short solo.

Expectations of Students:

Students must attend weekly rehearsals for Hacket-Tones Ensemble. If a student misses more than 3 rehearsals, the student will be dismissed from the group.

Meeting Times:

Hacket-Tones Ensemble meets every Thursday from 3:00-3:30 pm.

 

JAZZ BAND

Grades 6-8

Club Advisor: Mr. Chris Zwarych

Explanation/Description

Jazz Band is an audition ensemble that meets once or sometimes twice a week. This involves 6th, 7th and 8th graders that are already enrolled in the band program. This group performs the music in the jazz and swing style selections for our concerts.

How can students join?

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade band members are eligible to audition for Jazz Band. Students must prepare two audition pieces of their own choice.

Expectations of Students:

Students must be in good standing in their band classes. They must show that they are actively practicing at home. If a student misses more than 3 rehearsals, they will be dismissed from the group.

Meeting Times:

Every Thursday 2:55-3:45 pm. Some Fridays 2:55-3:45 pm with advanced notice as it gets closer to concert time.

 

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

Grades 6-8

Club Advisor: Mr. Chris Zwarych

Explanation/Description

Percussion Ensemble is a select ensemble that meets once or sometimes twice a week. This involves 6th, 7th and 8th graders that are already enrolled in the band program. This group performs selections for our concerts.

How can students join?

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade band members are eligible to audition for Percussion Ensemble and do not have to play in the percussion as their "primary instrument" to join.

Expectations of Students:

Students must be in good standing in their band classes. They must show that they are actively practicing at home. If a student misses more than 3 rehearsals, they will be dismissed from the group.

Meeting Times:

Every Tuesday 2:55-3:45 pm. Some Fridays 2:55-3:45 pm with advanced notice as it gets closer to concert time.

 

STUDENT COUNCIL

Grades 5-8

Club Advisors: Mrs. Wendy Flynn and Mrs. Dana Laden

Explanation/Description

Student council is a collection of student leaders from the school. These students have the forum to change aspects of the school through the use of democracy. They are elected to their position and on a monthly basis can offer suggestions on behalf of their homerooms to enact changes that they believe would have a positive impact on our school community.

How can students join?

Students must be elected by their homerooms to represent their classmates. Officers are elected by the entire school and must give a speech before the election.

Expectations of Students:

Officers must maintain an 80% average in all classes, receive 3 recommendations by faculty and demonstrate positive leadership at all times. Representatives and Officers cannot miss more than 3 meetings.

Meeting Times:

Times and days vary, information will be provided in the Morning Announcements, September through June

 

SYMPHONIC BAND

Grades 6-8

Club Advisor: Mr. Chris Zwarych

Explanation/Description

Symphonic Band is an honor's select ensemble that meets once or sometimes twice a week. This involves 6th, 7th and 8th graders that are already enrolled in the band program. This group performs the most musically advanced selections for our concerts.

How can students join?

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade band members are eligible to audition for Symphonic Band. Students must prepare two audition pieces of their own choice.

Expectations of Students:

Students must be in good standing in their band classes. They must show that they are actively practicing at home. If a student misses more than 3 rehearsals, they will be dismissed from the group.

Meeting Times:

Every Wednesday 2:55-3:45 pm. Some Fridays 2:55-3:45 pm with advanced notice as it gets closer to concert time.

 

TIGER TUNES

Grades 6-8

Club Advisor: Mrs. Colleen Grzywacz

Explanation/Description

How can students join?

Tiger Tunes meets every Tuesday from 3:00-3:45 pm.

 

VOLLEYBALL, GIRLS & BOYS

Grades 6-8

Club Advisors: Ms. Lisa Bamber and Ms. Nikki DiSanto

Explanation/Description

This club is designed for students in grades 6th-8th. Team members will have the opportunity to learn and practice the fundamentals of the sport of Volleyball, be a member of a competitive team, and continue their athletic development. Students compete in two away matches, transportation will be provided.

How can students join?

Students will be invited to attend an after school interest meeting where they will be able to pick up a permission slip.

Expectations of Students:

Students will adhere to the player contract and all associated school rules.  They must have a sport physical in order to participate.

Meeting Times:

Practices and matches will be held January-March

 

YEARBOOK

Grades 7-8

Club Advisors: Ms. Lisa Bamber and Ms. Nikki DiSanto

Explanation/Description

Yearbook Club is available for 7th and 8th graders and focuses on collecting memories of our school year. Club members will meet on an as needed schedule to capture all of the excitement at HMS.

How can students join?

Interested 7th and 8th grade students should see Ms. Lisa Bamber and Ms. Nikki DiSanto for details.

Expectations of Students:

Students will be asked to take pictures during the school year; therefore, students will be held accountable to follow all directions and expectations developed for the Yearbook club.

Meeting Times:

As needed basis.
