Class Syllabus
Fifth-grade social studies focuses on the cultures and environments of Native Americans, along with the European exploration and settlement of the Americas. The course also explores the conception of the American colonies, which ultimately led to the birth of the United States of America, and the exploration of the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship in both the past and present.
Class Expectations
- Respect yourself and others: Use kind words, cooperate, help, and share.
- Work to be better than you were yesterday: Put in 100% effort each day.
- Stay positive: Obstacles are challenges to show off your problem-solving skills.
Class Procedures
- Follow all teacher directions, both written and verbal.
- Bring all the supplies you will need. This includes a charged Chromebook.
- Raise your hand to ask or answer a question, unless otherwise directed.
- Ask permission to leave the room. Create a SmartPass to document your exit from class.
- If you finish work early, read silently or go to the “I’m Done! What Now?” topic in Google Classroom for ideas.
Academic Work Procedures
- Turn in all assignments on or before the due date.
- Assignments will be accepted late for a short period, but points will be deducted unless otherwise noted. MIS in the gradebook will count as a zero until the assignment is turned in. If the assignment is not turned in, the zero will remain.
- See the HMS handbook on the school website for the school policy regarding absences and related work.
- Corrections may be made on some approved assignments.
Grading
Students’ grades will be calculated using the school’s grading system. The type of assessment and points assigned to it will be noted in the Realtime grading portal.
- Class Assignments (ex. projects, quizzes, tests, reading/writing tasks) 95%
- Benchmark Assessments 5% (1 per marking period)
